We had an assassination attempt and the bowing out of a presumptive nominee within 8 days. What will happen next? With a title like this, you might expect we are talking about end times. But, God is king over all the nations, including ours and he is doing just what he said he would do. He fulfills his word, sometimes in the usual way, sometimes in extraordinary ways. We have watched it in real-time.
NOTES:
- Daniel 2:20-22 Daniel answered and said: “Blessed be the name of God forever and ever, to whom belong wisdom and might. He changes times and seasons; he removes kings and sets up kings; he gives wisdom to the wise and knowledge to those who have understanding; he reveals deep and hidden things; he knows what is in the darkness, and the light dwells with him.
- Isaiah 40:22-24 It is he who sits above the circle of the earth, and its inhabitants are like grasshoppers; who stretches out the heavens like a curtain, and spreads them like a tent to dwell in; who brings princes to nothing, and makes the rulers of the earth as emptiness.
RECAP/TAKEAWAYS
- Don’t read more into events than is there. You don’t know for sure what God is doing until after the fact.
- Don’t let historical events change your conduct. Unusual events do not call for panicked or un-Christian responses. Represent Jesus in your conduct.
- 1 Peter 1:14-19 As obedient children, do not be conformed to the passions of your former ignorance, 15 but as he who called you is holy, you also be holy in all your conduct, 16 since it is written, “You shall be holy, for I am holy.” 17 And if you call on him as Father who judges impartially according to each one’s deeds, conduct yourselves with fear throughout the time of your exile, 18 knowing that you were ransomed from the futile ways inherited from your forefathers, not with perishable things such as silver or gold, 19 but with the precious blood of Christ, like that of a lamb without blemish or spot.
- 1 Peter 2:11-12 Beloved, I urge you as sojourners and exiles to abstain from the passions of the flesh, which wage war against your soul. 12 Keep your conduct among the Gentiles honorable, so that when they speak against you as evildoers, they may see your good deeds and glorify God on the day of visitation.
- Avoid partisan passions.Do not interpret these events through the lens of your preferred outcomes. If the other team wins, it does not necessarily spell doomsday.
- Beware of a desire for more drama. The news can be addicting, especially when it is so unusual.
- Pray.
- Pray for President Biden and his family, Donald Trump, and Kamala Harris. Pray for the election results to be such that the church can live quiet and godly lives in Christ Jesus.
