Like barnacles accumulate on rocks or a ship, so many, many things attach themselves to the church. Before long we can’t conceive of the church without those barnacles.
The pandemic stripped the church of many things the church had grown accustomed to — bulletins, hymnals, programs. Most notably, though, it affected the subjective experience of worshippers. We ask the question of all those things, is it essential? It is interesting that we made even our subjective experience essential. Of course, there are many psalms written by worshipers and for worshipers that are anything but a pleasant subjective experience.
